Automatic UTM Tracking for Email Campaigns
With automatic UTM tracking in KlickTipp, you can evaluate the performance of your email campaigns in analytics tools such as Google Analytics or Matomo. Instead of manually adding UTM parameters to each link, you configure them once globally so that KlickTipp appends the UTM tracking parameters automatically every time you send an email.
What Are UTM Parameters?
UTM parameters are small text snippets you add to a URL to track where a visitor comes from, which campaign brought them to your site, and how they interact with your links.
https://yourshop.com/offer?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=autumnoffer&utm_content=CTA&utm_id=campaign-123
This allows you to see in Google Analytics or other analytics tools which campaign generated clicks, through which medium (e.g. email), and which specific link in the email was clicked.
Important to Know
You must activate link tracking to use UTM tracking in your emails. Only links with click tracking enabled will have UTM parameters appended.
Advantages of Automatic UTM Tracking
- Time saving: No need to manually add UTM parameters to each link
- Consistency: Uniform, clean UTM tagging across all campaigns
- Fewer errors: No risk of typos or missing UTM tracking parameters
- Better data quality: Complete and accurate campaign reports in your analytics tools
Step-by-Step Instructions
In this guide, you will learn how to set up automatic UTM tracking in KlickTipp by configuring global UTM settings. This ensures that all links in your email campaigns are tagged consistently and your marketing data can be analyzed accurately.
Configure Global UTM Settings
- Open settings:
Go to → User Account → Settings → UTM Tracking. - Activate tracking:
Enable the "UTM tracking" checkbox (disabled by default). As soon as you activate it, the configuration fields for the individual UTM parameters become available.

Good to Know
If you select → Custom, an input field appears for your own value (max. 250 characters, only URL-compliant characters allowed).
How UTM Parameters Are Automatically Appended
You can still manually add UTM parameters to links in your emails. These values are not overwritten. So you can override the global UTM tracking settings for individual links or campaigns when needed.
| Situation | Result |
|---|---|
| No parameters available in the link | All active UTM parameters are appended. |
| Some parameters already available | Only missing parameters are added. |
| Individual campaign name set | The custom name is used in the utm_campaign parameter. |
Example link after sending the email:
https://deinshop.de/angebot?utm_source=KlickTipp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Newsletter_Oktober&utm_content=CTA&utm_id=12345
Campaign-Specific Tracking Name
You can optionally store a different UTM campaign name for the utm_campaign parameter for each campaign, newsletter, or autoresponder. This is how you proceed:
- Open the → Different name for UTM tracking field in your email under → Setup & recipients → Advanced settings .
- Enter the desired campaign name.
- Save your changes.
Example: You use campaign names with prefixes such as → Q4_2025_NEWSLETTER_SALE internally, but only want to see → NEWSLETTER_SALE. Enter this value in the field.
Data Protection & Technical Information
- UTM parameters do not contain any personal data.
- All changes are saved in the account and apply to all email types.
- If link tracking is deactivated, no UTM parameters are appended.
- Tracking parameters that have already been added manually are not overwritten, no duplicate parameters are added.
Known Restrictions & Notes
| Topic | Description |
|---|---|
| Manually set parameters | Existing parameters in a link are not overwritten. |
| User-defined values | Values must be URL-compliant and may not exceed 250 characters. |
| Deactivated tracking | If link tracking is deactivated, no UTM parameters are added. |
Conclusion
With global automatic UTM tracking, you no longer have to manually add UTM parameters to every link and still get clean, consistent tracking data for all emails. This makes UTM tracking and campaign reporting easier, more accurate, and much more efficient. Activate UTM tracking once – and KlickTipp will handle the UTM tagging for you automatically.
