Automatic UTM Tracking for Email Campaigns

With automatic UTM tracking in KlickTipp, you can evaluate the performance of your email campaigns in analytics tools such as Google Analytics or Matomo. Instead of manually adding UTM parameters to each link, you configure them once globally so that KlickTipp appends the UTM tracking parameters automatically every time you send an email.

What Are UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters are small text snippets you add to a URL to track where a visitor comes from, which campaign brought them to your site, and how they interact with your links.

This allows you to see in Google Analytics or other analytics tools which campaign generated clicks, through which medium (e.g. email), and which specific link in the email was clicked.

Important to Know

You must activate link tracking to use UTM tracking in your emails. Only links with click tracking enabled will have UTM parameters appended.

Advantages of Automatic UTM Tracking

  • Time saving: No need to manually add UTM parameters to each link
  • Consistency: Uniform, clean UTM tagging across all campaigns
  • Fewer errors: No risk of typos or missing UTM tracking parameters
  • Better data quality: Complete and accurate campaign reports in your analytics tools

Step-by-Step Instructions

In this guide, you will learn how to set up automatic UTM tracking in KlickTipp by configuring global UTM settings. This ensures that all links in your email campaigns are tagged consistently and your marketing data can be analyzed accurately.

Configure Global UTM Settings

  • Open settings:
Go to → User AccountSettingsUTM Tracking.
  • Activate tracking:
Enable the "UTM tracking" checkbox (disabled by default). As soon as you activate it, the configuration fields for the individual UTM parameters become available.

Campaign-Specific Tracking Name

You can optionally store a different UTM campaign name for the utm_campaign parameter for each campaign, newsletter, or autoresponder. This is how you proceed:

  • Open the → Different name for UTM tracking  field in your email under → Setup & recipientsAdvanced settings .
  • Enter the desired campaign name.
  • Save your changes.

Example: You use campaign names with prefixes such as → Q4_2025_NEWSLETTER_SALE  internally, but only want to see → NEWSLETTER_SALE.  Enter this value in the field.

  • All changes are saved in the account and apply to all email types.
