Optimize Your Campaigns with SmartLink Tracking

Discover how you can make the best use of SmartLink tracking for your needs. Also learn how easy it is to create SmartLinks in KlickTipp. With a SmartLink, you can easily assign a tag to a contact with a single click. When a contact clicks on the SmartLink, you find out exactly which contact visited your landing pages. This is a great way to find out more about your recipients.

How does it work? You create a URL as a SmartLink within KlickTipp. This gives the URL special tracking options. A URL can only correspond to one SmartLink in KlickTipp. Each SmartLink therefore requires an individual URL. If you need several SmartLinks with the same destination, it is necessary to create separate URLs.

Did you Know?

Link tracking must be active for clicks on SmartLinks to be measured. If the URL of the SmartLink contains a special character, it must be shortened. To do this, use a link shortener such as Prettylinks. Please note that clicks on SmartLinks are only counted in emails that have actually been sent. Preview emails are not taken into account here.

Step-by-Step Instructions

SmartLink Tracking

  • In the menu, click on → Automation → SmartLinks → New SmartLink.
  • Name the SmartLink.
  • Enter the URL for the SmartLink to which your recipients should be directed after clicking on the link.
  • Click on → Create SmartLink.

When they click on exactly this URL, your recipient is tagged with the name of the SmartLink. A tip from us: Use SmartLinks in your signatures too. These often contain the URL of your website, which gives you additional options. You can therefore assign a tag when one of your contacts clicks on a link in the signature. You can check the development of clicks on your SmartLinks. To do this, click on → Automation → SmartLinks in the menu.

Use SmartLinks with Parameters

Would you like to break down the tracking of a SmartLink in more detail? That's very easy. You can simply add one or more parameters with the appropriate values.

Example: Suppose you sell T-shirts and want to find out who is generally interested in them. Then you could, for example, create a SmartLink that looks like this: → https://mywebsite.com/tshirts.

If you now want to know more precisely who is specifically interested in red T-shirts, you can add a parameter with a value. Your SmartLink would then look like this: → https://mywebsite.com/tshirts?color=red.  In this case, the SmartLink is tracked generally for T-shirts and additionally for red T-shirts. This allows you to evaluate both link clicks separately and use them optimally.

Important to Know

If you use several SmartLinks with the same link and identical UTM parameters, clicking on one of these links automatically sets the markers for the other SmartLinks. This also applies to intersections: If SmartLink1 contains all the parameters of SmartLink2 and the user clicks on SmartLink1, it is also marked with SmartLink2.

Example: A link with the parameters A, B  and C  also triggers the marking of a link that only contains B  and C -  as long as the link itself is identical. The order of the transferred parameters does not matter - it does not affect the result.

Please note: If a parameter occurs more than once in the link, only the last value passed is taken into account.
