Use the “Update Contact” Action in Your Campaign

With the “Update contact” action, you can automatically adjust contact data fields - without any manual intervention. In this step-by-step guide, you will learn how to use the action in the Marketing Cockpit. This will keep you flexible and your contact information always up to date.

There are many ways to change the content of fields, depending on the type of field. Fields of type → Date & time can be updated with a time shift, for example. Fields of type → Line work with purely textual changes. You can insert fixed values or values from other fields. With the “Update contact” action, you ensure up-to-date and correct data in your contact management. This saves time, increases data quality and makes your campaigns even more targeted.

  • Please select the “Update contact” action in your campaign.
  • Give the action a name that describes its purpose well - for example → Copy content from field A to field B.
  • First select the field you want to update from the drop-down menu.

Step-by-Step Instructions

The following operations are possible depending on the field type:

  • Field of type text or paragraph:
    • Here you can insert values in the form of text
      • from other fields or contact data
      • insert defined texts
      • use placeholders
  • Field of type e-mail:
    • Insert e-mail address from another field or contact data
  • Field of type number or decimal number:
    • Here you can insert values in the form of numbers or decimal numbers
      • from other fields or contact data
      • add or subtract
      • insert a random number
  • Field of type URL:
    • Insert values from other URL fields or contact data
    • A query (e.g. ? search term=red\&page=2) or remove a path part from the URL
  • Field of type time:
    • insert time values from other time fields
    • insert current time
    • round the time to the nearest or previous full hour
  • Field of type date:
    • insert date values from other date fields or contact data
    • insert current date
    • set a date in the future or in the past
    • various other date-related operations
  • Field of type date & time:
    • all operations of the field of type date
    • additional specification of the time
  • Field of type HTML:
    • all operations of the field types text & paragraph, but with HTML text
  • All field types:
    • Delete content of the field

As soon as a contact reaches the “Update contact” action in a campaign, the selected field in the master record is automatically adjusted as you specify. You can include as many “Update contact” actions in a campaign as you like. For example, you can create a campaign that only serves to update the master record of a contact.
